It’s the age of digital technology but the concept of “paperless office” still seems to be a distant future. The printing presses still play a huge role in supplying necessary office materials. They often range from booklets, pamphlets and brochures to business cards, calendars and stationeries. So it is obvious that printing presses, in order to meet the huge requirements of the modern day office need huge resources to deliver and meet the standards. And when it comes to resources required by the printing presses, the primary is energy. It is surprising that paper and printing industry ranks fourth among manufacturers in the amount of energy consumed.

This huge amount of energy consumed and harmful wastes produced by these printers to meet the daily commercial demand of the offices often adversely affects our environment. Printing houses produce VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds which are caused by laminates, adhesives, varnishes and others daily requirements of any printing business. These Volatile Organic Compounds cause air pollution and increases the risk of asthma attacks. In a nutshell, they contribute immensely to a major threat that our home planet is facing today, pollution. If steps are not taken immediately and effectively against this threat, a day would soon come when human beings would lose their only home in the whole galaxy.

Keeping this in mind, several organizations have developed all over the world who works hand in hand to save the planet from the impending danger. These organizations monitor various processes and figures out alternatives for the harmful but necessary actions that could be applied to diminish the threat as much as possible. FSC or Forest Stewardship Council is one such organization. It is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization having its headquarters in Bonn, Germany. It was established in 1993 and promotes responsible management of the world’s forests. All products that carry the FSC label are a guarantee to the consumers that the products come from a responsible source.

Every single one of us can help in making this world a safer and better place by using products labeled and certified by these organizations. This is also the case for the paper and printing industry. Paper and printing products having the FSC label essentially guarantees that they are safe for the environment. In order to get these certificates the companies have to follow certain steps. These include sorting and recycling of all waste, using only non-toxic compounds, use vegetable based non-toxic inks that have negligible or zero VOCs, steer clients towards recycled paper or use paper from sustainable sources, use equipments that produces lowest possible waste, maintain chemical free printing plate creation process and monitor energy usage. These factors diminish the threat of VOCs, air pollution and consumption of huge resources and hence make the product safe for environment. FSC certified green printers are not only best for the daily office necessities but also safer and better for the future of our planet.
