New Age Music Reaches Out To All Ages

New age music isn't necessarily a musical genre that you're likely to associate with children, but that may just be changing. As more and more kids start learning about yoga and mediation, chances are that they will be assimilating some new age tunes in the form of yoga music or meditation music. If we look back through history, both yoga and meditation are very old practices that come from very rich spiritual traditions. Their current association with new age practitioners is actually incorrect- if you were to look at the demographics of people who practice yoga, you would notice that a very high percentage of people are what you would think of as "regular people," the sort that have 9-5 jobs and whose homes don't have a single crystal in them. When it comes to building a strong body and mind, there is room to grow and develop at any age. For children, the advantage of learning a practice like yoga is that this is a practice that they can use for the rest of their lives. The benefits that they experience as children will only continue to get more valuable as they age. Most kids are surprisingly flexible, and their bodies extremely resilient. Think about it- you see kids rolling down big hills and tumbling around on the ground all the time. If adults were to try these activities, most would experience fear of injury, pain and discomfort. Children are less likely to have neck and back problems resulting from a car accident for the same reason- they just don't carry the tension in their bodies that many adults do. It is a sad fact, but many adults don't really know how to relax. When the body is under stress, it tightens up. Unless something is done to relieve tight muscles, they often remain tight, pulling on the spine or on other muscles and joints, spreading the problem around. Learning to stretch muscles out and actually lie still, fully relaxed, is a skill that often takes practice for adults, where as if children learn this early on when it is still natural for them, they will have a much easier time as an adult. Much of what is being discussed here is really a matter of habit. Anyone can learn to do these things, but they take practice and consistency. The earlier you learn the habits, the easier it is to keep them, and the more time you have to enjoy the benefits! Using tools such as yoga music can also help to cement the practice in place, providing a constant aspect to refocus on. In terms of the benefits to children, there are many. For those in school, it can be a remarkably simple way to help them learn to focus and concentrate more effectively and for longer periods of time. Yoga can also be used to reduce their anxiety, which many children experience at school, especially during testing. The sense of achievement they experience as a result of learning new poses helps build their self-esteem and their confidence. It also teaches the benefits of hard work and sticking with something. Children are so proud of what they accomplish, and love to share that with those around them, which makes it a great way to have some family time as well.
