Introduction to GMAT math:

If we discuss about the type of problems in GMAT math section, there are two types of questions: problem solving and data sufficiency.

About one-third of all questions are data sufficiency questions. Below are examples of problem solving and data sufficiency questions

Example: Problem Solving

If 5 men can paint one building in 6 days, how many men are required to paint 2 buildings in 4 days?

(a) 24
(b) 20
(c) 15
(d) 10
(e) 5

Example: Data sufficiency
After a certain percent of discount the price of cell phone becomes $40. What was the amount of discount in dollars?

1. The percent discount was 25%
2. Due to the discount the sale of cell phone increased by 25%

(a) Statement 1alone is sufficient, but 2 alone is not
(b) Statement 2 alone is sufficient, but 1 alone is not
(c) Both statements together are sufficient
(d) Neither statement is sufficient
(e) Both statements together are not sufficient.

GMAT Math: The Problem section

The math section of GMAT could be very intimidating for many students not because the questions asked are very tough but because the questions require a very skillful application of relatively simple underlying GMAT math concepts.
