Are You Done Applying For College Yet
You have worked all night and produced an amazing college application essay. You have filled out all the forms and checked for spelling and grammar errors. You have ordered your transcripts sent and gotten amazing recommendations. With a sigh of relief you press the last “submit” button knowing you have completed your college applications. Now what? You are done, you want to celebrate. Don’t do that quite yet, you have one more thing to do. Check your Facebook account. Many college admissions officers will check Facebook and Google to see if you are a nice person they want on their campus. Those funny pictures that show you doing something that could be illegal but everyone knows it was just a joke? Get rid of them. What about pictures that include something that could be drugs or alcohol? Get rid of them. What about those candid pictures of friends getting ready for the chorus concert, they don’t include you? Get rid of them, you are associated with your content. What about all those unkind comments written during your miserable week of grounding? Or all the negative comments about teachers, universities, or admissions officers? Get rid them. If you don’t want an admissions officer to see it or read it, get rid of it. If your account is too awful, just get rid of the whole thing and start over. If it would make your mother cringe, your father yell, or your Grandma blush, get rid of it. Immaturity is OK when you are immature, but colleges are looking for mature, law-abiding, community oriented students. Be sure your Facebook page reflects this. What about friends’ comments and postings? Be sure you delete often and as needed. Reset your privacy to the most secure settings to prevent any hacking. Editing your Facebook page right now is a really good idea. Not just for college admissions, but for potential job opportunities as well.
